Résultat d’une sous-alimentation, d’une mauvaise absorption ou d’une assimilation imparfaite des nutriments consommés, en raison de maladies infectieuses répétées. Elle comprend les cas d’insuffisance pondérale par rapport à l’âge, de taille trop petite par rapport à l’âge (retard de croissance), de maigreur dangereuse par rapport à la taille (émaciation) et de carences en vitamines et en minéraux (malnutrition par carence en micronutriments).
