Bei einer Leihmutterschaft wird die Eizelle der Wunschmutter oder jene einer Eizellenspenderin im Reagenzglas befruchtet, entweder mit den Samen des Wunschvaters oder eines (anonymen) Samenspenders. Der Embryo wird dann einer Leihmutter eingesetzt. Diese übernimmt die Schwangerschaft und gibt das Kind nach der Geburt den Wunscheltern ab.
