A differenza del frumento (grano tenero), molto diffuso nella Svizzera occidentale, la spelta è meno esigente; resistente al freddo e all'umidità, può venir coltivata come cereale invernale fino a quote piuttosto elevate.

DOM: Getreide; EXP: war bis ins 19. Jahrhundert die meist verbreitete Getreidesorte und wichtigste Brotfrucht der Deutschschweiz; als im 20. Jahrhundert resistentere Weizenzüchtungen auf den Markt kamen, ging der Dinkelanbau rasch zurück; im Kanton Tessin war der Anbau von Dinkel nie von Bedeutung

DOM: cereali; GRM: f., talvolta usato al maschile, quando è l'abbreviazione di «farro spelta»; USG: preferito; EXP: cereale appartenente alla famiglia delle Poaceae, è la specie di frumento vestito più recente ed è originaria dell'Asia centroccidentale. Le spighette hanno di norma due cariossidi. Fino al XIX sec., fu il cereale più diffuso e il principale grano destinato alla panificazione nella Svizzera tedesca; la sua coltivazione subì un forte calo nel XX sec. con l'introduzione di varietà di frumento più resistenti. In Ticino questa coltivazione non è mai stata rilevante
