Der Gesichtsbildabgleich ist eine ergänzende Methode in der biometrischen Identifikation von Personen und Tatortspuren, insbesondere wenn keine Fingerabdruck- oder DNA-Spuren vorhanden sind. Das System funktioniert wie beim Fingerabdruckabgleich: Beispielsweise kann in einem Strafverfahren ein Bild einer verdächtigen Person mit im AFIS gespeicherten erkennungsdienstlichen Bildern abgeglichen werden.

Facial image comparison (colloquially known as “facial mapping”) is a general term used to describe the process of comparing the facial image of an unknown subject to that of a known subject, in an attempt to determine the degree of similarity/dissimilarity between the two subjects. This is not to be confused with facial recognition, which is matching a questioned face to a database of known faces either via computer software or by a human recognising someone they already know.

Le système fonctionne de façon identique à la comparaison des empreintes digitales : il permet par exemple, dans le cadre d'une procédure pénale, de comparer une image d'un suspect avec des images signalétiques contenues dans le système AFIS.
