Research provides the FOPH with the necessary knowledge for guiding its decisions and practices. It is conducted primarily in the form of federal policy research (federal government research).

EXP: sie kann folgende Massnahmen umfassen: den Betrieb bundeseigener Forschungsanstalten, Beiträge an Hochschulforschungsstätten für die Durchführung von Forschungsprogrammen, die Durchführung eigener Forschungsprogramme in Zusammenarbeit mit Hochschulforschungsstätten, Forschungsförderungsinstitutionen, der Kommission für Technologie und Innovation (KTI) oder weiteren Förderorganisationen sowie die Erteilung von Forschungsaufträgen (Auftragsforschung)

USG: preferred; use only when referring to research in the following 11 policy areas: health, social security, environment, agriculture, energy, sustainable spatial development and mobility, development and cooperation, security and peace, vocational and professional education and training, sport and exercise, and sustainable transport; EXP: may include the following measures: operating the Confederation's own research institutes; contributing to higher education research centres for the implementation of research programmes, implementing the Federal Administration’s own research programmes, in particular in cooperation with higher education research centres, research funding institutions, the CTI or other funding organisations, and awarding research contracts (contract research) (a); departments are responsible for the research in their area of responsibility (b)

EXP: elle peut comprendre les mesures suivantes: l'exploitation d'établissements fédéraux de recherche, l'allocation de contributions à des établissements de recherche du domaine des hautes écoles pour la réalisation de programmes de recherche, la réalisation de ses propres programmes de recherche, notamment en collaboration avec des établissements de recherche du domaine des hautes écoles, des institutions chargées d'encourager la recherche, la Commission pour la technologie et l'innovation (CTI) et d'autres organismes d'encouragement, ainsi que l'octroi de mandats de recherche (recherche contractuelle)

EXP: può contemplare i provvedimenti seguenti: l'esercizio di centri federali di ricerca, la concessione di sussidi a centri di ricerca universitari per la realizzazione di programmi di ricerca, la realizzazione di propri programmi di ricerca, segnatamente in collaborazione con centri di ricerca universitari, istituzioni di promozione della ricerca, la Commissione per la tecnologia e l'innovazione (CTI) o altre organizzazioni di promozione, come pure il conferimento di mandati di ricerca (ricerca su commissione)
