Die Etymologie der politischen Verwendung dieses Begriffes ist erwähnenswert. 1917 publizierte der St. Galler Historiker ein Buch mit dem Titel "Die geistige Überfremdung der Schweiz" gegen die in die Schweiz geströmten “Drückeberger und Refraktäre” und “Schieber und Wucherer” (d.h. Juden).1925 verabschiedete der deutsche Akademikertag einstimmig den folgenden Antrag: “Der Überfremdung der deutschen Hochschulen durch jüdische Lehrkräfte und Studierende ist ein Riegel vorzuschieben. Für die Studierenden ist der Numerus Clausus einzuführen.”
