A essere maggiormente sottoposto all'attacco di agenti patogeni è il materiale per i favi vecchio e più volte utilizzato per la covata; per evitare l‘insorgere di malattie è pertanto consigliabile rinnovarli regolarmente: ogni anno, in primavera, si dovrebbe rinnovare almeno un terzo dei favi di covata.
