La neuraminidase permet de libérer le virion grippal. Après réplication de son génome, le virus de la grippe s'assemble et va se lier à des fragments d'acide sialique présents sur la membrane de cellules fortement glycosylées.
Neuraminidasen sind in der Membran verschiedener Viren verankert und können die Glykoproteine der Membran von Viruswirtszellen und Viren selbst spalten. Somit können sie sich aus infizierten Zellen befreien. Medikamente wie Neuraminidasehemmer können diesen Prozess unterbinden bzw. verlangsamen.
The main function of the Neuraminidase (NA) might be to remove receptors for influenza virus from newly formed virus particles so allowing these to be released and spread the infection.
