La santé publique vétérinaire (SPV) en tant que domaine spécialisé de la médecine vétérinaire a considérablement gagné en importance ces dernières années dans le contexte de la surveillance, de la lutte et de la prévention des maladies et des résultats pertinents pour la protection des animaux. Les maladies transmissibles à l'homme directement par les animaux ou par l'intermédiaire des denrées alimentaires (zoonoses) constituent, outre la santé et la protection des animaux, un autre domaine d'activité important de la SPV.

Vom Tier direkt oder über Lebensmittel auf den Menschen übertragbare Krankheiten (Zoonosen) stellen neben Tiergesundheit und Tierschutz ein weiteres wichtiges Arbeitsgebiet von VPH dar.
