USG: questo termine è utilizzato anche nella traduzione in italiano dei «Medical Subject Headings» dell'Istituto Superiore di Sanità italiano; in questo thesaurus del sapere biomedico «alfabetizzazione sanitaria» viene utilizzato nel contesto dell'istruzione, dell'assistenza sanitaria (strutture, manodopera e servizi) e della scienza dell'informazione. Va notato che, in italiano, l'«alfabetizzazione» è un processo che si subisce passivamente; questo sinonimo, pur essendo il più diffuso, esclude quindi l'accezione «awareness» («consapevolezza») presente nel termine inglese; EXP: nell'ambito della prevenzione e della promozione della salute in Svizzera, l'alfabetizzazione sanitaria comprende cinque dimensioni: la salute personale (gestione individuale della salute), il comportamento di consumo (capacità di tener conto degli elementi legati alla salute nelle scelte d'acquisto), il mondo del lavoro (misure precauzionali e sicurezza), la capacità di orientamento individuale (nel sistema sanitario) e la politica sanitaria (azione informata, partecipazione a organizzazioni)
