Un altro tipo di capriata, definita in ingl. hammerbeam, fu anch'essa molto impiegata, soprattutto a partire dalla fine del sec. 14°, per coprire i vasti spazi delle cucine signorili; era strutturata da mensole aggettanti orizzontali che partivano all'altezza delle travi di soglia da ambo i lati del muro sostenendo un tetto di forma arcuata che mascherava i numerosi puntoni e saette che, a loro volta, reggevano il peso delle strutture lignee.
