Dank der Barrierefreiheit sollen alle Menschen ein möglichst normales Leben führen können, also auch jene mit einer körperlichen, sensorischen, intellektuellen oder psychischen Behinderung. Barrierefreiheit bedingt die Umsetzung spezifischer Massnahmen zur Verminderung oder Beseitigung der Hindernisse, mit denen Menschen mit Behinderungen in ihrem persönlichen und sozialen Leben konfrontiert sind.

La totale accessibilité est essentielle à l’accomplissement des objectifs de l’inclusion sociale et de l’égalité de participation. L’accessibilité est une condition préalable cruciale pour que les personnes handicapées puissent prendre part à la vie de la société. C’est d’ailleurs l’un des principes généraux de la convention des Nations unies relative aux droits des personnes handicapées (articles 3 et 9).

When I talk about accessibility, I’m using it to mean that people are not excluded from using something on the basis of experiencing a disability; accessibility means that people can do what they need to do in a similar amount of time and effort as someone that does not have a disability, it means that people are empowered, can be independent, and will not be frustrated by something that is poorly designed or implemented.
