L’eau de mer contient une grande quantité de carbonate de calcium (CaCO3) dissoute. De nombreux organismes utilisent ce carbonate de calcium pour former leurs squelettes et autres parties dures de leurs corps. Quand ces organismes meurent, les courants marins brisent ces fragments en petits morceaux appelés sédiments bioclastiques.
On the continental shelf, we find bioclastic sediments with a high content of the remains of stony corals.
Sedimenti bioclastici. E' possibile che parti consistenti di origine biologica possano concorrere a formare rocce sedimentarie mescolandosi in gran numero con sabbia o ghiaietta. Un esempio tipico lo si può osservare in molte spiagge attuali constatando la quantità di pezzetti di conchigle frammentate presenti sulla battigia.
