Damit kann etwa festgestellt werden, ob eine Entzündung besteht oder aber ein Tumor vorliegt. Biopsien sind besonders in der Krebsmedizin wichtig, um zwischen gutartigen und bösartigen Tumoren zu unterscheiden sowie um den Grad der Bösartigkeit zu bestimmen. Prinzipiell kann aus jedem Organ oder Gewebe des Körpers eine Gewebeprobe entnommen werden. Entsprechend spricht man von Hautbiopsie, Leberbiopsie, Lungenbiopsie, Knochenmarkbiopsie, Nierenbiopsie, Magenbiopsie, Muskelbiopsie und so weiter.

La biopsia permette, con lo studio istologico diretto, una diagnosi molto precisa e costituisce il metodo più valido nella diagnosi delle neoplasie. A seconda delle patologie si ricorre a diversi tipi di biopsia [biopsia da aspirazione, biopsia ecoguidata, ecc.].
