EXP: young people completing lower-secondary school (and therefore compulsory education) may be unable to transition from lower-secondary to upper-secondary level, usually because they have not found a suitable apprenticeship position in a desired occupation. They therefore spend a 'tenth' year of schooling or 'bridge year' as a transitional period in which they attend a bridge-year course, or a preparatory course at a VET school, or a pre-apprenticeship at a host company, or perhaps even spend time abroad to improve their language proficiency.
