Enforcement is the practical implementation of environmental legislation. The cantons are primarily responsible for enforcing federal legislation. In areas such as gene technology or waste import and export, the federal authorities are directly responsible for enforcing the law, as is the case with other federal laws (railways, national roads, aerodromes etc.).

L’exécution, ou mise en œuvre de la législation, incombe le plus souvent aux cantons (fédéralisme d’exécution). La Confédération l’assure toutefois elle-même dans des domaines comme le génie génétique ou l’importation et l’exportation de déchets, ou encore dans des secteurs relevant d’autres lois fédérales (chemins de fer, routes nationales, aérodromes, etc.).

Per esecuzione si intende l’attuazione concreta della legislazione ambientale. Essa è affidata in prevalenza ai Cantoni ai sensi di un’esecuzione federale. Nei settori dell’ingegneria genetica, dell’esportazione o importazione di rifiuti, , come pure nell’applicazione di altre leggi federali (ferrovia, strade nazionali, aerodromi ecc.) l’esecuzione è invece affidata alla Confederazione.

Vollzug ist die Umsetzung der Umweltgesetzgebung in der Praxis. Dies geschieht mehrheitlich im föderalen Vollzug durch die Kantone. In Bereichen wie der Gentechnik oder der Ein- und Ausfuhr von Abfällen vollzieht der Bund selbst, ebenso bei der Anwendung anderer Bundesgesetze (Eisenbahnen, Nationalstrassen, Flugplätze etc.).
