Les anticorps dits « monoclonaux » sont des anticorps fabriqués spécifiquement pour traiter une maladie. Ils sont produits par des cellules (il peut s’agir d’une bactérie, d’une levure ou d’une cellule de mammifère) qui ont été sélectionnées et cultivées pour leur capacité à produire un anticorps particulier. Celui-ci a d’abord été obtenu en exposant des cellules immunitaires rigoureusement identiques (un clone cellulaire) à une protéine dite « protéine cible » contre laquelle ce clone a fabriqué un anticorps, comme dans une réaction immunitaire.
