Le Programme national de recherche "Vieillesse" (PNR 32) a examiné les conséquences des changements démographiques liés au nombre croissant des personnes ayant atteint l'âge de l'AVS dans les années à venir. Le programme avait pour but de mettre en évidence les conséquences du vieillissement démographique pour l'économie, la société et la culture. Ont également été examinées les adaptations au développement démographique du système de santé ainsi que de l'aide et des soins aux personnes âgées. Le programme a aussi mis en lumière les possibilités d'augmentation de l‘autonomie et de la qualité de vie des personnes âgées.
