Die Sekundarstufe I setzt die Primarstufe fort bis zum Ende der obligatorischen Schulzeit. In den meisten Kantonen beginnt sie mit dem 7. Schuljahr (etwa 13. Lebensjahr) und dauert 9 Jahre nach Beginn der Primarstufe. Die Sekundarstufe I dient dem Erwerb einer grundlegenden Allgemeinbildung sowie der Vorbereitung auf das Berufsleben oder auf den Übertritt in höhere Schulen. Der Unterricht wird in mehreren Fächern durch Fachlehrkräfte erteilt.

The lower secondary level follows on from the primary level and lasts until the completion of compulsory schooling. In most cantons, it starts when children are in their seventh year of education (i.e. when they are aged around 13) and ends nine years after enrolment at primary level. The lower secondary level provides a basic general education and prepares pupils for the transition to working life or for obtaining a higher qualification. Lessons are usually taught by specialists in the various subjects.

Le degré secondaire I fait suite au degré primaire et s'achève avec la fin de la scolarité obligatoire. Dans la plupart des cantons, il commence lorsque les enfants atteignent leur septième année scolaire (c.-à-d. lorsqu'ils sont dans leur 13e année environ) et s'achève neuf ans après le début du degré primaire. Le degré secondaire I donne une formation générale de base et prépare au passage dans la vie professionnelle ou à l'acquisition d'une formation supérieure. L'enseignement est le plus souvent donné par matière par des spécialistes des différentes disciplines.

Il grado secondario I rappresenta la continuazione del grado primario e chiude l'istruzione obbligatoria. Nella maggioranza dei Cantoni inizia con il settimo anno scolastico (intorno ai tredici anni) e termina con il nono anno scolastico dall'inizio della scuola dell'obbligo. Le conoscenze acquisite al termine del grado secondario I sono di tipo generale e preparano gli allievi al mondo del lavoro o al passaggio alle scuole di grado superiore. La formazione è articolata per materie e le lezioni sono impartite da insegnanti qualificati nella materia.
