Diese Abteilung umfasst drei Arten von Tätigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Forschung und Entwicklung: (1) Grundlagenforschung: experimentelle oder theoretische Arbeiten, die in erster Linie zur Gewinnung neuer Erkenntnisse über die Grundlagen von Erscheinungen und wahrnehmbaren Tatsachen dienen, ohne dass damit bestimmte Anwendungen oder ein bestimmter Nutzen angestrebt wird; (2) angewandte Forschung: Untersuchungen zur Gewinnung neuer Erkenntnisse, die in erster Linie auf ein spezifisches praktisches Ziel ausgerichtet sind; und (3) experimentelle Entwicklung: planmässiges Arbeiten auf der Grundlage vorhandener Kenntnisse aus der Forschung und/oder aufgrund praktischer Erfahrung, das auf die Herstellung neuer oder die Verbesserung vorhandener Werkstoffe, Erzeugnisse und Geräte, Einrichtungen, Vorrichtungen, Systeme, Instrumente etc. gerichtet ist und auch die Einführung neuer Verfahren, Systeme und Dienstleistungen, sowie auf die wesentliche Verbesserung bereits hergestellter oder eingeführter Verfahren inkludiert. Die Forschungs- und experimentellen Entwicklungstätigkeiten in dieser Abteilung sind nicht als Hilfstätigkeiten anzusehen. Sie werden in die beiden folgenden Kategorien unterteilt: Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften sowie Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften.

This division includes the activities of three types of research and development: (1) basic research: experimental or theoretical work undertaken primarily to acquire new knowledge of the underlying foundations of phenomena and observable facts, without particular application or use in view; (2) applied research: original investigation undertaken in order to acquire new knowledge, directed primarily towards a specific practical aim or objective; and (3) experimental development: systematic work, drawing on existing knowledge gained from research and/or practical experience, directed to producing new materials, products and devices, to installing new processes, systems and services, and to improving substantially those already produced or installed. Research and experimental development activities in this division are not to be regarded as ancillary activities. They are subdivided into the two following categories: natural sciences and engineering; social sciences and the humanities.

Cette division comprend les activités de trois types de recherche et développement : 1) la recherche fondamentale : travaux expérimentaux ou théoriques entrepris principalement en vue d'acquérir de nouvelles connaissances sur les fondements des phénomènes et des faits observables, sans envisager d'application ou d'utilisation particulière 2) la recherche appliquée : investigation originale entreprise en vue d'acquérir de nouvelles connaissances, orientée principalement vers un but ou un objectif pratique spécifique, et 3) le développement expérimental : travaux systématiques, fondés sur les connaissances existantes issues de la recherche et/ou de l'expérience pratique, visant à produire de nouveaux matériaux, produits et dispositifs, à mettre en place de nouveaux procédés, systèmes et services, et à améliorer sensiblement ceux qui sont déjà produits ou mis en place. Les activités de recherche et de développement expérimental de cette division ne doivent pas être considérées comme des activités auxiliaires. Elles sont subdivisées en deux catégories : sciences naturelles et ingénierie; sciences sociales et humaines.

Questa divisione comprende le attività di tre tipi di ricerca e sviluppo: (1) ricerca di base: lavori sperimentali o teorici intrapresi principalmente per acquisire nuove conoscenze sui fondamenti dei fenomeni e dei fatti osservabili, senza che siano previste particolari applicazioni o utilizzi; (2) ricerca applicata: indagini originali intraprese per acquisire nuove conoscenze, dirette principalmente verso uno specifico scopo o obiettivo pratico; e (3) sviluppo sperimentale: lavoro sistematico, basato sulle conoscenze esistenti acquisite dalla ricerca e/o dall'esperienza pratica, finalizzato alla produzione di nuovi materiali, prodotti e dispositivi, all'installazione di nuovi processi, sistemi e servizi e al miglioramento sostanziale di quelli già prodotti o installati. Le attività di ricerca e sviluppo sperimentale di questa Divisione non sono da considerarsi attività accessorie. Sono suddivise nelle due seguenti categorie: scienze naturali e ingegneria; scienze sociali e umanistiche.
