Diese Abteilung umfasst die Verarbeitung von Erzeugnissen der Landwirtschaft, Forstwirtschaft und Fischerei zu Nahrungs- und Futtermitteln für Mensch und Tier sowie die Herstellung verschiedener Zwischenerzeugnisse, die noch keine Nahrungs- und Futtermittel darstellen. Häufig entstehen auch Halbwaren von mehr oder weniger hohem Wert (z. B. Häute aus der Schlachtung oder Ölkuchen aus der Ölerzeugung). Die einzelnen Unterteilungen stellen auf die verschiedenen hergestellten Erzeugnisse ab: Fleisch, Fisch, Obst und Gemüse, Öle und Fette, Milcherzeugnisse, Mühlenerzeugnisse, Futtermittel und sonstige Nahrungs. Die Produktion kann auf eigene Rechnung oder im Auftrag Dritter (z. B. Lohnschlachtung) erfolgen. Diese Abteilung umfasst nicht die Zubereitung von Speisen zum sofortigen Verzehr, etwa in Speisegaststätten. Einige Tätigkeiten werden zur Herstellung von Waren gezählt, selbst wenn man diese auch als Detailhandelstätigkeit im eigenen Ladengeschäft des Herstellers auffassen könnte (z. B. Bäckereien, Konditoreien und Fleischverarbeitung). Sofern jedoch nur eine geringfügige Verarbeitung erfolgt, die keine wirkliche Umwandlung darstellt (z. B. Backshops sowie Fleisch- und Fischhändler usw.) wird die Einheit dem Handel in Abschnitt G zugeordnet. Die Zubereitung von Nahrungsmitteln zum sofortigen Verzehr an Ort und Stelle ist in Abteilung 56 (Gastronomie) eingeordnet. Die Verarbeitung von Schlachtabfällen und -nebenerzeugnissen zu Futtermitteln wird in 109 eingeordnet, die Verarbeitung von Nahrungsmittel- und Getränkeabfällen zu Sekundärrohstoffen hingegen in 383 und die Entsorgung solcher Abfälle in 3821.
This division includes the processing of the products of agriculture, forestry and fishing into food for humans or animals, and includes the production of various intermediate products that are not directly food products. The activity often generates associated products of greater or lesser value (for example, hides from slaughtering, or oilcake from oil production). This division is organised by activities dealing with different kinds of products: meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, fats and oils, milk products, grain mill products, animal feeds and other food products. Production can be carried out for own account, as well as for third parties, as in custom slaughtering. This division does not include the preparation of meals for immediate consumption, such as in restaurants. Some activities are considered manufacturing (for example, those performed in bakeries, pastry shops, and prepared meat shops, etc. which sell their own production) even though there is retail sale of the products in the producers' own shop. However, where the processing is minimal and does not lead to a real transformation, the unit is classified to Wholesale and retail trade (section G). Preparation of food for immediate consumption on the premises is classified to division 56 (Food and beverage service activities). Production of animal feeds from slaughter waste or by-products is classified in 109, while processing food and beverage waste into secondary raw material is classified to 383, and disposal of food and beverage waste in 3821.

Cette activité génère fréquemment des produits associés de valeur supérieure ou moindre (par exemple peaux pour l'activité d'abattage ou tourteaux pour la production d'huile). La division est organisée en sous-filières: viandes, poissons, fruits et légumes, corps gras, produits laitiers, meunerie et travail du grain, aliments pour animaux et autres filières alimentaires. La production peut être effectuée pour compte propre ainsi que pour le compte de tiers, notamment l'abattage particulier. Cette division ne comprend pas la préparation de plats pour consommation immédiate, comme dans les restaurants. Certaines activités sont considérées comme manufacturières (par exemple: les boulangers, pâtissiers, charcutiers, etc. qui vendent leur propre production), même s'il s'agit d'une vente au détail dans leur propre magasin. Questa divisione include la trasformazione di prodotti dell'agricoltura, della silvicoltura e della pesca in alimenti e bevande commestibili per l'uomo o gli animali, ed include la produzione di vari prodotti intermedi che non possono essere considerati direttamente prodotti alimentari o di sottoprodotti di valore più o meno elevato (ad esempio, pellame proveniente dai macelli, panelli provenienti dalla produzione di olio). Questa divisione è organizzata per attività riguardanti diversi tipi di prodotti: carne, pesce, frutta e ortaggi, oli e grassi, prodotti lattiero-caseari, granaglie, mangimi per animali e altri prodotti alimentari. La produzione può essere effettuata per conto proprio o per conto terzi, come nel caso della macellazione su ordinazione. Questa divisione non include la preparazione di pasti per il consumo immediato come nei ristoranti. Alcune attività sono considerate manifatturiere anche se l'unità che le espleta vende al dettaglio in un proprio negozio (p. es. panifici, pasticcerie e macellerie) . Tuttavia, nel caso in cui la lavorazione sia minima e non conduca ad una reale trasformazione (p.es. le attività nel retrobottega nonché quelle di macellai e pescivendoli), l'unità viene classificata nella sezione Commercio all'ingrosso e al dettaglio (sezione G). La preparazione di alimenti per il consumo immediato sul posto è classificata nella divisione 56 (Attività di ristorazione) Il trattamento di scarti e sottoprodotti della macellazione per la produzione di alimenti per animali è classificato nel gruppo 109, mentre la trasformazione di cascami di alimenti e bevande in materie prime secondarie è classificata nel gruppo 383, e lo smaltimento di cascami di alimenti e bevande nella classe 3821.
