1907 wurde in Bern das 'Schweizerische Postmuseum' eröffnet. 1949 wurde dem Museum, welches bisher nur das Postwesen und die Philatelie umfasste, auch das Fernmeldewesen angegliedert und den Namen in 'Schweizerisches PTT-Museum' geändert. Mit der Neuausrichtung der Schweizerischen PTT-Betriebe wurde das Museum 1997 in eine, durch Swisscom und die Schweizer Post getragene Stiftung überführt und der Name in 'Museum für Kommunikation' geändert. Damit änderte sich auch die Ausrichtung des Museums. Neu widmet sich das Museum umfassend dem Thema 'Kommunikation'.
